The Tasman Island cruise from Hobart: Pennicott's full day by coach with Port Arthur or the devils, against driving to Port Arthur for the cruise alone. Prices and times.
The Tasman Island cruise leaves from Port Arthur, 94 km by road from Hobart, and Pennicott Wilderness Journeys runs a full day to it from Hobart: check in by 7:15 am at its booking centre on Franklin Wharf, next to the Constitution Dock lifting bridge, for a 7:30 am coach, and you are back about 6 pm. The day with the Port Arthur Historic Site in the afternoon is Tasman Peninsula Tour, Cruise & Port Arthur Historic Site, from US$243 a person (checked November 2026), with morning tea, lunch and the site entry included.

The short answer
Take the day from Hobart if you have no car, or would rather not drive 90 minutes each way on top of three hours at sea: the coach, morning tea, lunch and the afternoon are planned for you, and the cruise is the same one. Drive to Port Arthur if you have a car and want to set your own pace: the cruise alone costs less, there is an afternoon sailing from 1 December to 28 April, and the Historic Site’s visitor centre is about 800 m on foot from the booking centre. Pennicott has no parking of its own at its Hobart office, so plan how you reach Franklin Wharf by 7:15 am.
The ways to book it, side by side
| Booking | What you get | From |
|---|---|---|
| The cruise alone, from Port Arthur (GetYourGuide) | The 3-hour cruise and the bus to the boat; you get yourself to Port Arthur | US$134 |
| Day from Hobart with the Historic Site (GetYourGuide) | Coach, morning tea, the cruise, lunch and about 3 hours at the Port Arthur Historic Site | US$243 |
| Day from Hobart with the Historic Site (Viator) | The same day, sold on Viator | US$246 |
| Day from Hobart with the devils (GetYourGuide) | Coach, morning tea, the cruise, lunch and the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo | US$243 |
| Cruise day from Hobart (Viator) | Coach, the cruise and lunch; the Historic Site or the Unzoo only as a paid option | US$207 |
Prices per person from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026; Viator checked November 2026). On its own site Pennicott prices the full day from Hobart at A$290 an adult and A$215 a child aged 3 to 16, the day with the Port Arthur Historic Site or the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo at A$345 an adult, and the cruise alone from Port Arthur at A$190 (November 2026).
The Hobart day, hour by hour
The coach leaves Franklin Wharf at 7:30 am and reaches the Tasman Peninsula at about 9:15 am for morning tea. The cruise runs from 10 am to about 1 pm, the same morning cruise that drivers join at the booking centre. What follows depends on the day you booked: lunch and sightseeing nearby on the plain day; lunch, then the Tasmanian Devil Unzoo from 2:45 pm on the devils day; or three hours at the Port Arthur Historic Site, with lunch there, on the Historic Site day. The coach leaves the peninsula at 4:30 pm and drops you at Hobart hotels at about 6 pm, a day of about 10 hours 15 minutes.

The itineraries do not name Tasmans Arch, Devils Kitchen or the Tessellated Pavement at Eaglehawk Neck as stops, so do not count on them. Tasmans Arch and Devils Kitchen reopened in October 2026 after six months of works, and they are a few steps from the car park if you drive yourself.

Driving yourself

The road is sealed all the way: east from Hobart over the Tasman Bridge to Sorell on the A3, then the A9, the Arthur Highway, through Dunalley and across the isthmus at Eaglehawk Neck to Port Arthur, 94 km from Franklin Wharf to the booking centre. Allow 90 minutes, and you must be at the booking centre at 6961 Arthur Highway by 9:15 am for the morning cruise, so leave Hobart by 7:30 am. Where the cruise leaves from shows the booking centre and the jetties.
The Port Arthur days that are not this cruise
Several cheaper days from Hobart to Port Arthur carry the word “cruise” in their names. On Gray Line's Port Arthur and Tasman Park day, from US$112, and Tassie Tours Tasmania's Port Arthur shuttle day, from US$109 (checked November 2026), the cruise is the Historic Site’s own harbour cruise of about 20 minutes around the Isle of the Dead, which comes with every site entry ticket. They suit a day of convict history; they do not go under the cliffs of Cape Pillar or out to Tasman Island.
